A language exchange is a supportive group that meets regularly to share their language for the purpose of helping others learn how to communicate with other speakers of their language. Participants have shared goals of language acquisition and shared responsibility for one another's success.

The following materials are suggested:

• paper or notepad

• pen/pencil

• language dictionary or app

• textbook (if wanting help with a class)

There is no fee for online community membership. The participation fee for face-to-face meetings is $10 or ¥1500 per person. This fee will cover the facility fees, the facilitator's time, heating as needed, and any snacks/drinks that are purchased. This fee is not prorated or refundable.

Each meeting lasts from 60 to 120 minutes. You may stay as long as you like; however, the participation fee is not prorated.

This is a language exchange group. As such, all participants agree to work with others who ask for help. No participant should feel neglected or rejected because of socio-economic status, gender, assumed desirability, religion, age, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. Any participant who violates the tenets of the group will be asked to leave and barred from future sessions. Our Golden Rule: Participate, participate, participate!

Our facilitators have experience and training leading language exchanges. Some may be licensed teachers. Because they only facilitate the sessions, they should not be thought of as the primary teachers or instructors. A language exchange operates with the following goal in mind: each one teach one.

The short answer is yes. If you and another participant work together, then you will each provide one-on-one support. Also, if you are the only participant, the facilitator will work with you for the entire session or until others join.
